This week St. Kitts welcomes its newest waterfront bar as SALT Plage opens in Whitehouse Bay. The newest addition to Christophe Harbour, SALT Plage is the first Caribbean-side venue within the resort community. The bar’s open-air design takes full advantage of its seaside setting.  

Exuding a barefoot sophistication, SALT Plage will be the ideal spot for sipping inventive cocktails, including the signature Salt Pond Jumbie, taking in picture-perfect sunsets, and dancing the night away to the Caribbean beats of local musicians.

“SALT Plage complements the Southeast Peninsula’s existing hospitality offerings and is a great addition to the Christophe Harbour collection of amenities,” said Buddy Darby, Christophe Harbour CEO. “We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far for mixing and mingling under the Caribbean moonlight.”

SALT Plage may be a new facility, but its roots are historic, giving nod to the Federation’s salt and sugar industries. The site on which SALT Plage is built was once part of the estate of Dr. Arthur Wilkin, who ran a thriving salt export business there in the 1940s. The salt was mined from the neighboring salt ponds, processed and stored in a salt warehouse, and exported from a dock in Whitehouse Bay. The new venue incorporates the foundations of the old salt warehouse along with original machinery found onsite.  Interior and exterior materials on loan from the old Basseterre sugar factory have also been incorporated into the venue, putting St. Kitts’ sugar industry on grand display.

While SALT Plage is closely tied to the history of salt and sugar, it also looks to the future of the Federation’s yachting industry. The seaside bar will welcome guests arriving by boat or land at its new pier, which will extend 82 feet into the bay and encompass 1,450 square feet of decking with tie-ups for tenders and other small craft. The pier is available for patrons of SALT Plage only. 

Christophe Harbour's own John Denton Haley was the architect who masterminded the SALT Plage facility design. Haley also designed the exquisite Pavilion Beach Club, a signature feature of the Christophe Harbour community. St. Kitts-based RAZO Construction, with a crew that is almost entirely Kittitian, lead the construction effort. St. Kitts Marine Works, in association with RAZO, constructed the pier.
