On Thursday, 8 January, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas announced the people of the twin-island Federation would go to the polls on Monday, 25 January. Dr. Douglas sought a fourth term as Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. In office since 1995, the Labor Party took power from the People’s Action Movement (PAM) who had ruled since 1980. The opposition candidate, Harvard educated lawyer Lindsay Grant has led the PAM since 2000.

Campaigning commenced heavily in weeks prior to the election. Dr. Douglas turned his campaign focus toward the economy and government debt. He said in a tourism-dependent country of 40,000 people his emphasis would be building more roads and hospitals, and paying the national debt despite the global economic crisis. He also pointed out that during his 15 year rule the Federation has consistently maintained friendly relations with the United States.

On Tuesday, 26 January, it was announced that Dr. Denzil Douglas won the election and will remain Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis for the next five year term.
